Each year, the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) releases The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes, their annual report highlighting the severe shortage of affordable homes for low-income renters across the United States. This year's findings reveal a national deficit of 7.1 million affordable and available rental homes for extremely low-income households. Nationwide, there are only 35 affordable homes for every 100 extremely low-income renters, leaving millions struggling to secure stable housing.
In Nevada, the situation is even more dire. According to the latest report, there are 93,574 extremely low-income households, yet only 17 affordable and available rental homes per 100 households. One of the lowest ratios in the nation. The consequences are severe: 86% of extremely low-income renters in Nevada are severely cost-burdened, spending more than half of their income on housing, leaving little room for essentials like food, healthcare, and transportation.

As mentioned above, The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes was released this month highlighting the shortage of affordable homes for low-income renters throughout the country. No state or major metro area has an adequate supply of rental homes affordable and available for extremely low-income renters. More than 90% of these renters are in the labor force, are seniors, have a disability, are in school, or are single adult caregivers. Click below to download the complete report which includes a variety of figures and talking points on the affordable housing shortage including Nevada specific numbers.

The Empowerment Center Expanding Marvel Way

The Empowerment Center provides women in Northern Nevada struggling with substance abuse with a recovery and treatment program including transitional living and workforce development. Recognizing that the shortage of affordable housing was preventing their clients from moving into stable housing, they created their own solution by opening Marvel Way in 2022. This project developed a permanent 42-unit sober living space with onsite supportive services. They are set to provide an additional 46 units later this year. Click here to read more.
